Communities Harvesting Hope…

Who: Plant a Row for the Hungry is a public service program of the Garden Writers Association. GWA’s goal is to help feed the hungry by establishing Plant a Row networks in communities everywhere. Our local PAR is Northern Nevada’s Plant a Row.

Why: The need is great. According to the survey, “Hunger in America 2006” conducted by America’s Second Harvest (the nation’s largest charitable hunger relief org), 24-27 million Americans rely on emergency food services annually. The food banks and soup kitchens continually struggle to meet  their needs. As we have all heard and read recently there has been a huge influx of our neighbors, family, and friends needing assistance. This encompasses all age ranges: from the elderly to newborns, there is no “typical” hungry person.

What: You can help by reserving a small or large space in your garden to donate to our local Community food distribution center, Carson Valley Community Food Bank. It really is so easy; the average garden can produce a half pound of fresh produce per square foot. That’s a lot of food!

How: Plant It Nursery along with Bonnie Plants is going to make getting started easy by giving you one free Bonnie Plant of your choice to start your garden this year. Just pledge to do 3 or more drop off’s during the growing season. Every little bit makes a difference.  Our drop off times are Sunday and Monday throughout 2009. Your donations may be tax deductible.

When: The time is now! Come by Plant It Nursery to pick up your pledge kit. This includes your Plant a Row for the Hungry row marker, a free produce plant of your choice, any advice or support you may need, and that feel good feeling!

Where: Plant It Nursery 1346 Centerville Lane (across from St. Gall’s) in Gardnerville. For more information: call 775*781*1918, come by, email plantitnursery@charter.net, or visit our website www.plantitnursery.com
